"Creatures of Habitat.” In hopes of introducing guests of all ages to issues affecting the entire planet and at the same time inspiring them to take steps to embrace their role as a global citizen, the Zoo has introduced a world of life size LEGO brick animal sculptures. These sculptures serve to illustrate the Earth endangered wildlife and vanishing global habitat.
To relay the fact that the Philadelphia Zoo houses representation from each continent on the globe, the Zoo will also work in collaboration with community based organizations to host a series of weekends entitled “Creatures of Culture.” At this time, specific continents will be authentically highlighted through visual and performing arts, cuisine and other demonstrations. The Zoo has selected to highlight conservation projects in Asia, Africa, South America and North America.
The Summer Solstice at Penn Treaty park June 19, 2010 @ 23:00 The Sunrise ceremony at 5:00 am !!!!

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council: COMMONWEALTH SPEAKERS:
Mexican Identity in the 21st Century!
In Gettysburg at the Harrisburg Area Community College Gettysburg Campus. Sponsoring Organization: 21st Century Community Learning Center
This presentation explores the rich spirituality of Aztec dance. After the Spanish unsuccessfully attempted to eradicate the native cultures of Mexico (including their spiritually-powerful dance and music), they decided to mix aspects of Mexican indigenous traditions with their Catholic traditions. Some native Mexican people used this as a way to preserve mystical and spiritual aspects of Mexican indigenous wisdom. This talk explores Mexican identity and culture and also features a short documentary on the contemporary Aztec dance troupe of which Brujo de la Mancha is the founder. De la Mancha also explains the significance of clay flutes in traditional dance, and plays traditional melodies on flutes that he has made.
Erie Art Museum - upcoming special event March 25, 2010
The Power of Song – An Evening of Ballads, Courage and Hope
Free. $10 suggested donation Erie Art Museum Annex
Join us for a concert of poignant and stirring song and dance from three different continents. Mensura Berberovic, now living in Erie, is a master of the ancient Bosnian ballad. Mensura says, “My songs are only about love – love of husband, of family, nostalgia for my country, and because they are pure love they are my weapon against genocide.” Victoria Angelo and Marta Sam, also from Erie, share the music of the Acholi people of Uganda and Sudan. Their traditional songs and dances express the importance of peace and the heartbreak of war they have witnessed firsthand. Brujo de la Mancha, an Aztec flute maker and musician now living in Philadelphia, will round out the program with three other Aztec dancers. He says, “Wherever I go, I am always aware how my living culture is full of arts and spirituality. This awareness pushes me to keep working hard to identify ways to express to the public an indigenous perspective that is not always seen in our contemporary, or historical, society.”

Vernal Equinox Mar 22 2010 5:00 PM Penn Treaty Park 1199 N Delaware Ave Philadelphia.
An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long. It may be better understood to mean that latitudes +L and -L north and south of the equator experience nights of equal length.
The word is also used for the same event happening on other planets and in setting up a celestial coordinate system; see equinox (celestial coordinates).
At an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (i.e. declination 0) and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: the vernal point and the autumnal point. By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point.
An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (rather than two whole days), when there is a location on the Earth's Equator where the centre of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead, occurring around March 20/21 and September 22/23 each year.

MEXICA NEW YEAR MARCH 12, 2010
Please realize one thing, the most common thing that exist is time, and the most precise system for the measurement of time has been proven by modern science to be the TONALMACHIOTL, aka the maya/aztek calendar which is the culmination of the continental calendars.
Though not all may agree with when to begin measuring the new cycle there are some key dates that cannot be overlooked, and will help us in understanding the way this calendar works.
Unfortunately, most everyone believes that the last word on this subject has been said and the conclusion was "NO ONE CAN REALLY KNOW" duh! As a result we, humans cannot get back into the rhythm.
But many people and through many generations have held onto the count in their songs, dances, etc...
This year, our eldest UeUeTlatoani, spokesperson, of the Mexika tradition, Don Miguel Angel Mendoza, Kuaukoatl, is the invited guest of honor at the 1st Annual Mexika New Year at CCSF, on March 12, 2010. Kuaukoatl and other elders and leaders will visit us from Mexico City and will also be the featured honored guests at the annual Mexika New Year celebration in San Jose, California.
Kuaukoatl is an award winning lifetime journalist and author who has hosted a weekly educational and cultural forum for more than 40 years, at the same site. As co-founder and director of the Zemanauak, Kuaukoatl recounted the story to me of when he was the catalyst and key to the takeover and liberation of the Zocalo, Mexico City’s main square, in the ‘80s that initiated the recovery of our sacred places and spaces for the purpose of rendering them respect and homage for what they represent. It will be an honor to tracking and recording the cycles of the earth and nature in relations to human gestation at the rhythm of the cosmos, the communities of San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles and Philadelphia have joined together providing greater awareness and access to these Four-city, Alliance commemorations and celebrations.
